How to Get Your Education In Singapore

At a time when the costs for pursuing a degree in UK and US are becoming costlier for an Indian student, Singapore has emerged as a low-cost destination for quality education. No wonder that the number of Indian students in Singapore has risen by 21 per cent from last year. Going by the current trend, most Indian students either opt for management courses or subjects that are related to the info-communications industry.
Why Singapore?
"Education in Singapore is internationally recognised for its quality, its academic excellence, global outlook and industry relevance," observes Kenneth Lim, area director, north and east India, Singapore Tourism Board. Universities in Singapore offer a wide array of courses and a student-friendly, flexible curriculum. "The flexible curricula gives me the opportunity to choose from a variety of modules with the help of an academic advisor. I can now study engineering and also play the violin on campus," says Rashi Mehta, student of mechanical engineering, Nanyang Technological Univeristy (NTU).
The teaching faculties at the universities are highly qualified and experienced. "The tutors here are very committed and active in their research, and they make sure students really understand," Naresh Kumar Agarwal, a graduate student, NUS School of Computer. International education brand names such as the Chicago Business School have set up campuses in Singapore, while MIT, Stanford, Wharton Business School and Duke Medical have partnerships with the local universities - National University of Singapore (NUS), NTU and Singapore Management University (SMU) - which also rank highly on the global stage. University of New South Wales-Asia (UNSWAsia) established its first overseas campus in Singapore too. "Programmes offered at UNSW-Asia in Singapore will be of equal standing to those at UNSW in Sydney," says Greg Whittred, Asia president, UNSW. Singapore universities have also signed formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with top Indian institutions like Indian Institute of Management (IIM-B), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-B,IIT-D) and Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc).
These agreements have facilitated the exchange of academic and research personnel and students, as well as joint research collaborations. The signing of the CECA (Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement), last year, will certainly catalyse the inflow of Indian latent to Singapore for the education industry.
The cost factor
World-class quality education is available to Indian students in Singapore at an affordable price. Fees for higher education is low as the government heavily subsidies a substantial portion of the full tuition fees, in the form of tuition grants.
Foreign students who wish to receive the tuition grant are required to sign a Tuition Grant Agreement with the government. For these students, the subsidised fees are 10 per cent more than what a Singaporean student would pay. In return for the subsidised education, tuition grant recipients will be bonded to work in Singapore-registered companies for three years upon graduation. Singapore's employment pass and visa schemes facilitate the entry of foreign talent to Singapore. Course fees vary from 15,000 - 28,000 Singapore Dollars depending on the subject. "Singapore is suitable for me because the cost of living and studying here is lower than places like the US. The hostels too are comfortable and convenient to apply for," says Sreya Bose, an MBA student, NTU.
With its proximity and cultural ties with India, and the safe, efficient and friendly environment, Indian students have found Singapore to be a home away from home. "With excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology in campuses such as NUS, students here have an opportunity to receive a world-class education in a cosmopolitan environment. Parents should also be comforted by the fact that crime rates here are one of the lowest in the world," Tabrerez Neyazi, PhD student, NUS.
