Career in Interior Designing

If making the space around look contemporary and beautiful, then interior designer is what you can become. Our Career Counselor gives details about the career

If you have an interest in physical spaces and tend to take notice of your surroundings, are creative and artistic, and frequently make suggestions on how to improve your home surroundings, or you like to design or redesign your personal space, then Interior Design could be a suitable profession for you. You should also work well in teams and be good at problem solving and overcoming challenges. Interior designers also need to be disciplined, organized and skilled business people.

Interior designers plan and design or redesign attractive and useful interiors for homes, hotels, ships, hospitals, office buildings, and other commercial structures. They must know how to plan a space and how to present that plan visually so that it can be communicated to the client. They must be aware of the materials and products that will be used to create and furnish the space, and how texture, colour, lighting and other factors combine and interact to make a space. They must understand the structural requirements of their plans, the health and safety issues, building codes, and many other technical aspects.

Interior designers usually have to collaborate with architects, contractors, and other service providers so interpersonal skills are important. They must listen attentively to client’s requirements, and communicate clearly about how they wish to take the project forward.

Interior designers have to travel to different locations where projects are in different stages of completion, cope with paperwork on specifications, estimates, and purchase orders. The work is often performed under pressure of deadlines and budget limitations.

Some interior designers may specialise in one type of work such as residential or restaurants, hospitals etc. Interior designers who focus just on decorating are known as interior decorators who come into the picture after all structural activities are over. They choose a style and colour scheme in consultation with the client and then select appropriate furniture, floor and window coverings, artwork, and lighting, etc.

EDUCATION & TRAINING
Diploma courses in Interior Design or Interior Design & Decoration are offered after class 10 at polytechnics and vocational training schools. After 10+2 with Science, CEPT University, Ahmedabad offers a 5-year Undergraduate degree in Interior Design. Other options are 3 year or 4-year programmes including BFA with Interior Design as a specialisation.
Architects also may specialise in interior design.

Job opportunities tend to grow during times of economic prosperity. However, there does not seem to be any lack of competition even in a vibrant market, as there are always more aspirants than available job openings.
