Beauty-licious
Our Career Consultant steps into the billion dollar beauty industry and discovers the magic wand that is turning innumerable Cinderellas into dazzling princesses, the world over
New age techniques and advancements in the realm
of beauty services have reached overwhelming heights. The Indian cosmetic
industry's phenomenal growth can easily be attributed to the sudden
significance attached to image, coupled with high disposable incomes. The
opening up of the Indian economy in the last decade has witnessed an influx of
foreign brands averaging a growth rate of 15-20 per cent, thus making beauty a
billion dollar business.
Market impact
According to a global survey, a staggering $18.6 billion is spent annually on cosmetics.Envisaging a huge potential of India's burgeoning markets, many European and Asian companies are pumping in huge capital for associations. Says herbal legend Shahnaz Husain,"In 2004, emphasis was mainly on the spectacular growth of the herbal beauty business. Awareness of beauty treatments, skin and hair care, make-up products and grooming and fashion is at an all time high." Renowned brands of coloured cosmetics, sunscreens, lotions and gels have a favoured position amongst the masses.
This has resulted in demand for specialised skills and expertise, opening up to a plethora of career options."In our country, a career in beauty has more potential than any other line," say international aesthetician Dr Jamuna Pai. Increasing expectations and consumer preferences and attitudes command the latest technology and best constituents.
Prerequisites
A career in the beauty service industry has no specific eligibility criteria. However, receiving specialised and practical training helps in building proficiency."A school leaving education is enough to launch into vocational training, yet it gives the opportunity to complete courses right upto an advanced level and also enter related fields," remarks Husain.Gaining a diploma in beauty and hair care / cosmetology helps you pursue a career as a beautician or cosmetologist."A doctor who has completed a post graduation in dermatology with interest in cosmetology can opt for various streams as a skin care specialist," explains Dr Santhanam.
Succeeding in the hair industry involves artistry, scientific knowledge, academic education, communication skills and a bit of common sense all in varying amounts."Besides, training opens up an entirely different vista of opportunities," concludes Husain.
Cash back
"One can start their salon even at home, with less capital investment," suggests Husain."Nail parlours are doing big business and the machinery involved is not much. All you need is a 100 square feet space and you can earn good margins," confirms Dr Pai.
Remuneration depends on experience, skill and the stream undertaken.Beauty therapists earn about Rs 12,000 while senior stylists and hair colourists earn around Rs 8,000 onwards and approximately Rs 15,000 for a home industry cosmetologist.
Future prospects
Conventional blends with the principles and processes of modern science have given a new definition to cosmetic treatments. Therapy centres, beauty salons, clinics and modern spas are offering sophisticated and state-of-the-art services. India has witnessed a phenomenal transition in the cosmetic sector in the last few years.
The market is innovative and offers a cure for everything today.Cosmetic smiles, perfect teeth, lasers and makeovers are the rituals of modern age."From a basic pimple or scar treatment to the 24-carat pure gold facial, or even the most expensive ones - the consumer considers each as an investment," observes Rani Kapoor, skin and scalp therapist, Shahnaz Herbal Salon.
There is ample scope- be it opening up a salon or therapy centre, or treading on a career mission by recognising tremendous national and international work opportunities. Both could be your corridor to success.
Thus we could safely say that this is here to grow. And those who think that beauty is only skin deep, think yet again!
